Why the Gospel Still Matters

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.”
(Romans 1:16)

When Paul wrote to the believers in Rome, he wasn’t writing to farmers or villagers. He was writing to people living in the mega city of the day. Rome was crowded, pluralistic, politically charged, and full of spiritual alternatives. Sound familiar?

Chicago shares much with ancient Rome. It’s a diverse, fast-paced city, full of culture, politics, people, and a wide range of worldviews. Paul knew what it was to live in a big city where the gospel was often dismissed and even mocked, yet he boldly declared, “I am not ashamed of the gospel.” Why? Because he had experienced its power firsthand; the same power that is still changing lives today.

The gospel, also known as the “Good News,” is the heartbeat of Christianity. Nowhere is it more clearly explained than in the book of Romans. The gospel isn’t about living good enough lives to earn Heaven, because the truth is, none of us can. It begins with a hard truth that we are all sinners, separated from a holy God. But that leads to the greatest news of all: God made a way. That way is through Jesus Christ, God’s Son, who came to carry the weight of our sin on the cross, then rose from the dead to offer us new life.

Salvation is a gift, but like any gift, it must be received. Just hanging around church doesn’t make you a Christian. You must personally believe that Jesus is Lord, repent of your sins, and choose to follow Him. The gospel is simple enough for a six-year-old to understand, yet it’s so profound that scholars can study it for a lifetime. Without the gospel, the church is powerless, but with it, lives are truly transformed. Here’s my challenge to you: Have you embraced the gospel? Or are you still trying to measure up, hoping your “good” will somehow be enough?

If you’ve never realized your deep need for a Savior, maybe today is the day to say yes to Jesus. He’s still calling. Will you answer?

Prayer:
Dear God, thank You for the Good News that brings hope, healing, and salvation. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God who was sent to rescue me. I admit that I’m a sinner and I need a Savior. Forgive me for trying to make it on my own. I turn from my old ways and surrender my life to You. Help me walk in the new life You offer and never be ashamed of the gospel. In Jesus’ name, amen.
