A friend of mine recently bought a used car that looked great on the outside with a fresh paint job, clean interior, and low mileage. But when he took it to his mechanic for a check-up, the diagnostic scan revealed serious engine problems hidden beneath the surface. What looked great to my friend was actually on the verge of breakdown.
In life, too, things can appear fine on the outside while deeper issues go unnoticed. Sometimes, we don’t even realize we’re running on empty or close to a breakdown until God shines His light on what’s really going on inside. That’s exactly what happens in 2 Kings 6 when Elisha’s servant wakes up to find their city surrounded by a powerful enemy army. He panics, but Elisha remains calm because he sees something his servant doesn’t. Elisha prays, “Lord, open his eyes,” and suddenly the servant sees the hills filled with horses and chariots of fire—God’s heavenly army ready to defend them.
That’s what happens when we begin to see as God sees. We not only see our weaknesses but also God’s ready, saving hand.
The gospel is the ultimate eye-opener. It reveals what we can’t fix on our own and shows that beneath the surface of good behavior or outward success, our hearts are in desperate need of grace. Jesus didn’t come to clean us up on the outside. He came to transform us from the inside out. His death and resurrection make new life possible—but only when we stop relying on what we think looks “good enough” and allow Him to show us the truth about ourselves.
Maybe today you’re feeling like things are falling apart under the hood spiritually, emotionally, or relationally. It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling because that’s exactly where God meets you—right at the point of your brokenness. Don’t ignore the warning signs. Ask God to open your eyes, bring clarity, and lead you into healing and wholeness. What He reveals, He can redeem.
Prayer:
Lord, open my eyes. Help me to see beyond the surface of fear, guilt, and distraction to the deeper reality of Your presence and truth. Remove the spiritual blinders that keep me stuck and give me a clear vision of who You are, who I am in You, and what You’ve called me to do. Thank You for the gospel that brings light into my darkness. I want to live with eyes wide open to Your purposes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
When I was visiting my mom in Spain this past July, we took a quick two-hour trip to Burgos to visit my father’s gravesite. He is buried in a cemetery outside the city where he spent 20 years of his life loving people and sharing the gospel. On the simple stone marking his resting place are the words of Philippians 1:21: “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”
At 17, my dad surrendered his life to God at a Youth for Christ rally. A few years later, he and my mom answered the call to foreign missions. From his late 20s until the age of 60, he lived far from his parents, extended family, and homeland to share the good news. When I visit his grave, I often remind my kids of his story and pause to pray for the city of Burgos—that our family’s legacy of living on mission for God would continue and make a lasting difference.
