Following a Different Compass

We know the end destination is victorious—let Jesus guide you on the way there, even when the path is dark and countercultural.

”The end is the destination [eternity with Jesus], and Jesus helps us know about the journey in between here and there.”

—Mark Jobe

THIS WEEK’S BOLD STEP DEVOTION

A few years ago, my wife, Dee, and I were in Spain trying to navigate our way to a small hotel late at night. With luggage in tow, we relied on Google Maps to direct us. The route it showed was technically correct, but it led us down a dark, narrow, and spooky path. Though it felt uncomfortable and a little unsafe, we kept moving forward, trusting the map to get us to our destination. Sometimes, following the right path feels wrong, especially when it goes against the flow of what seems logical or popular. As believers, we are called to follow a different compass, one that often leads us against the current of the culture around us.

When it comes to the End Times, people often fall into two extremes: doubters who dismiss it altogether and alarmists who fixate over every headline, convinced it’s a coded sign. But Jesus offers a different perspective in Matthew 24–25. When the disciples asked Him about the end of the age, He didn’t give them a specific timeline. Instead, He warned them about deception, persecution, and spiritual coldness, urging them to stay alert. Jesus made it clear: it’s not our job to know the time—that’s God’s business. The end will come “like a thief in the night” (Matthew 24:43), suddenly and unexpectedly. Anytime you hear someone claim to know the exact date, you can be sure they are either a false prophet or someone who doesn’t know their Bible.

Jesus compared the signs of the end to birth pangs that increase in frequency and intensity but don’t guarantee the baby will arrive immediately. Earthquakes, wars, and persecution have been happening for centuries, but their acceleration is a reminder that we are getting closer. Yet rather than being filled with fear, we should be fueled with purpose. The increase in hardship is not meant to scare us but to prepare us. It’s a reminder that we need to be firmly grounded in the truth, able to stand strong even if the world around us grows darker.

The good news is that Jesus also promised that the gospel will be preached to the whole world before the end comes (Matthew 24:14). That means there is still time and still hope. God is not slow—He is patient, not wanting anyone to perish. Our job is not to speculate about the day or hour but to live boldly and share the gospel passionately. So keep your eyes on the true compass, God’s Word, so you can stay steady, knowing that no matter how dark the path may seem, the destination is certain.

Ministry Update from Mark

I’m personally witnessing God drawing youth to Himself in a fresh and powerful way all over the world. It’s been incredibly encouraging to see several hundred youth passionately worshipping the Lord on a Saturday morning at New Life Midway—right in the heart of Chicago.

While this generation, often called Gen Z, has faced its share of criticism and negativity, I am deeply inspired by what I see. Contrary to the labels of being disconnected or disinterested, I see a hunger for God, a boldness in faith, and a longing for truth. This generation is stepping up, seeking something real and life-changing.

In a culture that can often feel cynical or dismissive of young people, I’m reminded that God is raising up a remnant, a generation willing to stand for Him. I’m filled with hope and anticipation for what He will continue to do through these young hearts. Let’s continue to pray for and invest in them, believing for a mighty move of God through this rising generation.
