Tom Karel (MA, Wheaton College) is a limited licensed psychologist who has worked with Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services since 2000. Prior to coming to Pine Rest, he has worked in outpatient counseling through Mercy Hospital (Muskegon MI) and inpatient psychiatric care at Linden Oaks Hospital (Naperville IL). Tom provides outpatient counseling for children and adults in the treatment of anxiety, depression, bipolar, ADHD, anger as well as substance abuse disorders. It has been his privilege to assist individuals and families overcome their struggles and to grow in faith. He welcomes the opportunity (whenever possible) to include a person’s family members, pastor/counsel members or supportive friends in the counseling process. Tom also participates with Faith Community Outreach, an initiative within Pine Rest that seeks to connect area clergy, churches, and ministries to services available from Pine Rest; as well as develop new services specifically designed to benefit the faith community. Tom also serves as an elder at the Free Reformed Church.
Atheist-turned-Christian Lee Strobel, the former award-winning legal editor of The Chicago Tribune, is a New York Times best-selling author of more than forty books and curricula that have sold fourteen million copies in total. He currently serves as Founding Director of the Lee Strobel Center for Evangelism and Applied Apologetics at Colorado Christian University. After probing the evidence for Jesus for nearly two years, Lee became a Christian in 1981. He subsequently became a teaching pastor at three of America’s largest churches and hosted the national network TV program Faith Under Fire. In addition, he taught First Amendment law at Roosevelt University and was Professor of Christian Thought at Houston Baptist University.
