Alice Teisan was born and raised in Detroit, Mich. In 1992, at the age of 30, only days prior to a 1,000-mile bicycle trip, Alice was struck with a flu-like illness. Months later the diagnosis came, ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), which doctors say feels much like having AIDS.
Alice, an avid cyclist, had bicycled 10,000 miles on four continents—riding "coast to coast" across America twice, around England and Scotland, in Zimbabwe, Africa, and through Israel. But in a flash her health, her career ambitions, her financial situation, and her plans for the future—not to mention her big dream to bicycle on every continent—were shattered. God took Alice's dream and turned it upside down, replacing it with an even bigger dream inside her heart.
Alice founded His Wheels International (HWI) in 2005. HWI is a non-profit organization that promotes the design and building of hand-pedaled three-wheeled cycles that provide transportation to individuals in need in the developing world. Alice is also an inspirational speaker and the author of Riding on Faith: Keeping Your Balance When the Wheels Fall Off (2012) and Pray 10K—How the Radical Can Become Real: A 10,000-Hour Prayer Adventure (2017).
Mary Sweeney's husband, Bill, was diagnosed with a terminal disease called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in October 1996, just weeks after his 36th birthday, and Mary was his caregiver throughout his battle. Though given 3-5 years to live, Bill battled the disease for 24 years and passed away on December 30, 2020, at age 60. Mary and Bill have two daughters, one son-in-law, and three grandchildren.
