Surface-Level Appearances

Jesus sees right past any façade you put up and compassionately desires for you to give your whole person to Him.

”Our brokenness and emptiness can be a catalyst for seeking God.”

THIS WEEK’S BOLD STEP DEVOTION

“Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.’” (John 4:10).

The story of the woman at the well in John 4 beautifully illustrates how Jesus can see beyond surface-level appearances and address the deep-seated issues that keep us stuck in life. This woman, with her complex background, represents many of us—carrying burdens and feeling empty, relationally isolated, and sometimes defensive about our past.

When we first encounter people in our life, we often see only the surface, but everyone has a story filled with struggles and hidden pain. Jesus meets the woman in her brokenness, and His approach reveals a compassionate understanding of her situation. She comes to the well at a time to avoid others, indicating her desire to escape judgment or shame. Yet, it’s in this very moment of isolation that God orchestrates a divine encounter with her.

Jesus shifts the conversation from physical thirst to spiritual longing, showing her that true fulfillment comes from a relationship with God. He gently exposes the root issues of her life, not to shame her but to invite her into a transformative experience. Are there “root issues” or hidden struggles that you’ve been avoiding in your life?

If so, this narrative can serve as a challenge for you to confront your own emptiness and brokenness. You might be tempted to avoid your issues, but recognizing your need for God is the first step to profound change. Thankfully, as Jesus did for the woman, He comes to you first with the invitation to be known by Him. Just like the woman, you can allow Him to rewrite your story and give you abundant living water.

Ultimately, the message is clear: Jesus sees us for who we truly are, invites us to confront our past, and offers us a path to healing and fulfillment. Are we ready to embrace that invitation?

The Unsaved Christian:

Reaching Cultural Christianity with the Gospel

by Dean Inserra

Do you know someone who claims to be a Christian but their life shows little evidence of knowing Jesus? Many Americans identify as Christians because they believe in God, try to be good people, or grew up in Christian families—but their answer to “Why are you a Christian?” never mentions Jesus. In The Unsaved Christian, Dean Inserra reveals how to recognize and reach cultural Christians with the true gospel. This Bold Step Gift will transform how you approach evangelism in your own community and help you engage cultural Christians—one of the most underrated mission fields in America.
