The Personal Storehouse Principle

Are you ready with a financial “storehouse” for an unexpected day of emergency and/or scarcity?

”The way we manage our finances, time, relationships, and even our hearts reflects our trust in God and our understanding of His provision.”

—Mark Jobe

THIS WEEK’S BOLD STEP DEVOTION

“Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest."
(Proverbs 6:6–8).

Ants are incredibly small creatures, but their industriousness makes them a powerful example of wisdom and discipline. Despite their size, ants gather food continuously, working hard during times of abundance (summer) to prepare for times of scarcity (winter). Ants can teach us a lot about the importance of planning ahead and saving during times of plenty for times when resources might be scarce.

The personal storehouse principle is a biblical model highlighted in Proverbs 6:6, encouraging us to learn from the ants who wisely save and plan for future needs. This principle isn’t about hoarding or acting out of fear of disaster but rather about being proactive and responsible in creating a “storehouse” for times of need. There will be seasons in our lives where we may face job loss, health issues, or emergencies, and this storehouse helps us stay prepared for those unexpected circumstances and avoid going into debt.

Joseph’s example in Genesis 41 serves as a powerful model of this principle. During seven years of abundance, Joseph, with God’s guidance, instructed Pharaoh to store up grain in preparation for the seven years of famine that would follow. His wise planning saved not only Egypt but also the surrounding nations from the devastating effects of the famine. Just as Joseph wisely stored up grain, we, also, should plan and save during times of abundance to prepare for future challenges. Creating a savings account or an emergency fund allows us to handle unexpected events without stress and even be a blessing to others in times of crisis.

Having a storehouse creates stability in our lives. It provides confidence that we can face life’s uncertainties without being overwhelmed and focus on the things that truly matter—our relationship with God, our family, and others around us.
