The Blessing We Were Meant to Carry

”God wants you to experience His acceptance so deeply that it changes the way you lead, love, and bless others.”

—Mark Jobe

THIS WEEK’S BOLD STEP DEVOTION

“You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.”
(Exodus 20:5–6)

A child who constantly hears, “You’ll never amount to anything,” often grows up carrying those words deep into adulthood, but a child who hears the words, “I believe in you,” walks through life differently.

Words have the power to shape someone’s identity, confidence, and direction. That is why one of the very first things God did after creating Adam and Eve was to bless them. Throughout the Old Testament, blessing meant far more than a polite phrase spoken after a sneeze or a prayer before a meal. It meant speaking favor, worth, and purpose over someone’s life.

Still, human beings walked away from God’s original design, and what had been a blessing became a curse. Yet God did not abandon His plan to bless humanity. Through Abraham, God began restoring a cycle of blessing that was meant to be passed down from generation to generation. Jacob understood the importance of that blessing because he spent much of his life fighting for what he felt he never received from his father, Isaac, who favored Jacob’s brother, Esau. That is why his wrestling match with God was so significant. Jacob refused to let go because he believed God alone could shape his destiny. Through that struggle, God changed his identity from Jacob, the deceiver, to Israel, one who wrestles with God and overcomes.

Many people carry old labels, painful failures, and deep insecurities that continue to shape the way they see themselves. But when God gets ahold of your life, He begins to redefine who you are and reshape the direction of your future. If you’re trying to lead your family despite never receiving affirmation, encouragement, or confidence from those who raised you, know that God is able to restore what was missing. He doesn’t want you to simply know about His love. He wants you to experience His acceptance and blessing so deeply that it changes the way you lead, love, and speak into the lives of those around you.

Bold Step Challenge:
Ask God this week to help you stop defining yourself by old labels or past failures. Then intentionally speak words of blessing and encouragement over someone in your family.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for being a God who restores, blesses, and gives new identity. Help us stop living under old wounds and false labels and teach us to receive the blessing that only You can give. May our lives and families reflect Your favor, encouragement, and truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
