Are You an Awakener?

A woman is lying in bed as she reaches for her phone. A dog is leaning over her as it licks her face.

”Spiritually, we were all once in a world of darkness, but someone woke you up.”

—Mark Jobe

THIS WEEK’S BOLD STEP DEVOTION

I get a laugh out of memes that depict people waking up. These funny, often animated graphics show disheveled animals or people waking up with a funny caption. I’m sure we can all relate to the feeling of our minds and bodies not being completely functional when we wake up!

Spiritually, there was a time when our minds and hearts weren’t in sync as well. The Bible describes that condition as “darkness” or “blindness,” but something happened that woke us out of our stupor and helped us begin connecting the dots of faith. For most people, that “something” was a person in our life who faithfully prayed for us, invested in us relationally, and shared Jesus’ redeeming work with us. They are the “awakeners,” people who engage in the ministry of awakening others out of the darkness and into the light of God’s truth.

We are all called to be awakeners in our families, neighborhoods, and workplaces. Just as Jesus brings light to dark places, we also are carriers of that same power with the Holy Spirit residing in us. We bring the culture of the Spirit of God wherever we go and can display it in whatever we do.

God is in the business of restoring all things to Himself and bringing hope to the hopeless. Fortunately, He uses people like you and me to join Him in the ministry of awakening. Is there someone in your life that you need to help wake up today?

Ministry Update from Mark

This week, I’ll be heading to the National Religious Broadcaster’s International Christian Media Convention in Orlando, Florida, with several members of the Moody Radio team. NRB is the world’s largest gathering of Christian communicators and ministry professionals coming together for a time of learning, strategizing, and fellowship. I, along with my executive producer, Judy Kron, will be sharing the vision and mission of Bold Steps with our radio constituents in hopes that they will add this show to their programming lineup. Pray with us for fruitful conversations and connections!
