Finishing Strong

”We move to the finish line when we stop postponing and determine to finish what we start.”

—Mark Jobe

THIS WEEK’S BOLD STEP DEVOTION

“Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?”
(Haggai 1:3-4)

At some point in our lives, many of us received a clear vision from God. We knew our calling, our purpose, and the direction He was leading us, but along the way, discouragement and distraction crept in, causing us to put off what we were called to do. If this sounds familiar, I have good news for you, God is in the business of restoring vision and reigniting purpose.

After returning from exile, the Israelites began rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem but soon abandoned the project due to opposition from enemies, personal hardships, and a shift in their priorities. The book of Haggai records that for fourteen years, they lived with unfinished business yet, they carried on with daily life, unaware of how their procrastination was affecting them spiritually.

As a result of their neglect, God sent the prophet Haggai to awaken their hearts and help to realign their priorities, challenging them to pursue God's best rather than settle for less. In response to his message, God “stirred up the spirit” of the leaders and the people. They repented, set aside distractions, and resumed the work they had abandoned and in just four years, the temple was completed.

People lose motivation when they lose sight of the vision. The Israelites had forgotten the significance of their work, but when God stirred their hearts, they came together to rebuild His house. Many of us start strong in our faith journey but often let distractions, fear, or complacency stall our progress. Haggai’s message reminds us to:

  1. Reevaluate Your Priorities – Are you putting personal pursuits above God’s mission?
  2. Take Action – What step of obedience have you delayed?
  3. Trust God’s Presence – He is with you when you commit to His work.

Haggai is a challenge to stop procrastinating and pursue the mission God has given you—without delay. What unfinished business do you need to return to today?
