The Power in the Pause

”A pause allows us to focus better”

—Mark Jobe

THIS WEEK’S BOLD STEP DEVOTION

The beginning of a New Year is a good time to reflect on the past year and think about what you’d like to do differently in the coming one. It’s a time to pause in quiet reflection to consider what real changes you may need to make in your own life such as improving your health, having a greater work-life balance, even becoming a more patient person. Being a student of your own life requires time and intentionality.

Why is it important to have times and disciplines in our life where we slow down and pause? I believe it allows our spirits to be open to hearing the voice of God especially in a culture that is screaming for our attention. A pause also allows us to focus better, which many people miss because they’re off and running January 1. Building the PAUSE into the rhythm of your life can help calm and guide your heart and mind especially when life throws you a curve ball.

Being quiet and examining oneself can be difficult because it makes us uneasy however, God tells us that to succeed, we need to turn down the noise of the world to hear His.

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.” Psalm 37:7

In today’s message, we’ll hear the story of the prophet Elijah who, at a low point in his ministry, lost his focus on God which led to discouragement and hopelessness. But it’s at that moment when God speaks to him with a “delicate whisper” requiring Elijah to lean in and listen. Elijah had to turn down the noise in his own mind to hear God speak.

Can you hear when God whispers to you or are you too busy to stop and listen? Let’s take some time right now to pause and listen and start this year off on the right footing.

The Unsaved Christian: Reaching Cultural Christianity with the Gospel

The Unsaved Christian:

Reaching Cultural Christianity with the Gospel

by Dean Inserra

Do you know someone who claims to be a Christian but their life shows little evidence of knowing Jesus? Many Americans identify as Christians because they believe in God, try to be good people, or grew up in Christian families—but their answer to “Why are you a Christian?” never mentions Jesus. In The Unsaved Christian, Dean Inserra reveals how to recognize and reach cultural Christians with the true gospel. This Bold Step Gift will transform how you approach evangelism in your own community and help you engage cultural Christians—one of the most underrated mission fields in America.
