Burden of Proof

THIS WEEK’S BOLD STEP DEVOTION

Imagine you’re in a courtroom waiting for the verdict of a case. The outcome rests on the presentation of evidence—hard facts and tangible proof that can make or break the case. Without evidence, there’s no criminal case and no conviction.

Spiritually speaking, anyone can say that they believe in God and that they’re a Christian—but what is the real evidence that identifies them as a child of God? The apostle John said, “This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands” (1 John 5:2). In other words, John is saying that the evidence of a true Christian is their love for God, their willingness to do His will, and their genuine love for their fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. We should have the same depth of love that Christ Himself had when He willingly gave Himself up for us on the cross of Calvary.

In a trial, the prosecutor must prove to the jury that the defendant is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. In a sense, the world is like a jury and you’re the one on trial. How well do you manifest Jesus’ character in your life? What evidence would be presented to the court to show that you are living up to what you profess?

Let us live according to God and His Word, reflecting the One who left Heaven to walk this earth and prove He is the way of salvation!

Ministry Update from Mark

Happy Birthday to our son, Grant, who turned 25 a few weeks ago. I’ve been thinking about how grateful I am for the man he’s grown into. He sets clear goals and rigorously pursues them. He finished college debt-free and then served in short-term missions in Nepal and Mozambique. He’s recently become a first infantry lieutenant in the US Army! Most of all, he’s remained strong in his spiritual walk, despite challenging settings. I’m proud to call him my son!
