Stay in the Favor Zone

”Feeling knocked around by bitterness, disappointment, or temptation? Stay close to God.”

—Mark Jobe

THIS WEEK’S BOLD STEP DEVOTION

“From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.”
(Genesis 39:5)

I remember being in New York City with Dee on a rainy day. We were walking together under one umbrella, but if you’ve ever walked through New York, you know people can move fast and bump into you from every direction. Before long, I kept getting knocked out from under the umbrella and into the rain. Life can feel like that. Problems, pressure, and people keep bumping us until suddenly we realize we’ve moved out from under where we need to be. Some of you have been knocked around so much that bitterness, discouragement, or temptation is pulling you out of what I call God’s favor zone.

Joseph knew what it meant to be knocked around. His story seemed to move from good news to bad news and back again. He was betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, tempted, falsely accused, and thrown into prison. Yet Scripture repeatedly reminds us that the Lord was with Joseph. Joseph focused on God’s presence instead of his problems. He refused to allow bitterness to take root, and when Potiphar’s wife repeatedly tempted him, he maintained his moral compass and ran. That’s important because temptation can wear us down over time. We should never look at someone else’s failure and say, “How could they?” Instead, our prayer should be, “Lord, help me. By Your grace, keep me faithful.” When temptation comes, know who you are in God and be willing to run from anything that threatens your obedience.

Here’s what Joseph’s life teaches me: Obedience still leads to God’s purposes, even when the reward feels drastically delayed. Joseph probably couldn’t see it from the bottom of the pit or inside a prison cell, but every detour was moving him toward his destiny. Prison eventually led to the palace. You may be in a difficult chapter right now, wondering why God has allowed you to be there. Don’t let the pressure push you out of your place. Stay faithful. Stay free from bitterness. Guard your moral compass and carry God’s presence wherever you go. When God is with you, even the people around you can experience the overflow of His favor.

Bold Step Challenge:
Ask yourself, “What is trying to knock me out of my place of obedience?” Whether it’s bitterness, disappointment, pressure, or temptation, refuse to let it move you. Stay faithful where God has placed you and trust Him with where He is taking you.

Prayer:
Father, help me stay faithful when life feels unfair and Your purpose seems delayed. Guard my heart from bitterness and my life from compromise. Help me carry Your presence wherever I go and trust that even the difficult places can lead me toward Your purpose. Keep me faithful in the pit, the prison, and the palace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
