Will You Stay Stuck or Step into Freedom?

THIS WEEK’S BOLD STEP DEVOTION

“When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
(John 5:6)

Have you ever been stuck in life? Not physically stuck, but emotionally, spiritually, or mentally trapped in a cycle you can't seem to break. I remember when one of my daughters was young and got wedged between two metal bars on a stair railing. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't free herself. Fear set in as she realized she was trapped. Fortunately, we were able to free her, and the relief on her face was immediate. But many people remain stuck in places that aren't as visible, bound by habits, hurts, fears, or patterns they can't seem to overcome. The good news is that Jesus specializes in bringing freedom to those who are ready to take a bold step toward healing.

In John 5, Jesus encountered a man who had been disabled for 38 years, lying near the Pool of Bethesda. Rather than immediately healing him, Jesus asked a penetrating question: "Do you want to get well?" The man's response was filled with reasons why he couldn't change. How often do we do the same? We blame our circumstances, wait for others to change, or become so accustomed to our struggles that we settle into them. But healing begins with a decision. Jesus invites us to stop making excuses and honestly answer His question: Do we truly want the freedom He offers?

Jesus then told the man, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk" (John 5:8). Freedom often comes through obedient steps empowered by God's grace. The mat that once symbolized this man's limitation became evidence of his healing. Jesus didn't want him returning to his old way of life. Perhaps God is asking you to leave behind something that has kept you stuck for far too long. Whatever it is, remember that the same Jesus who calls you to freedom also gives you the strength to walk in it.

Bold Step Challenge:
Ask God to reveal one area where you've become comfortable being stuck. Stop making excuses and take one practical step this week toward the freedom Christ is offering you.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for seeing the places where I feel trapped and for offering me hope and healing through Jesus. Give me the courage to answer honestly when You ask if I want to get well. Help me let go of my excuses, trust Your process, and take bold steps of obedience toward freedom. Empower me by Your Spirit to walk in the new life You have prepared for me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
