Got Bible Questions?

Dr. Jeremy GrinnelI has answers to your Bible questions.  Jeremy earned his PhD in Systematic Theology from Calvin Seminary, he’s a bible teacher, a fantasy author and has an amazing story of redemption!

In this episode he answers the following questions:

How do you explain the virgin birth?

The bible talks about “true Jews,” and those who are ethically Jewish but aren’t “true Jews.” What’s up with that?

What do I say to those who question God's love and mercy when He allows innocents to suffer & perish?

How are we to be “in this world,” coming alongside those who don’t know Jesus, and not be “of the world”?

If once we’re saved, we’re always saved, then why do we need to be sanctified?

And, what even is sanctification?

“If I Make This Free Throw I’ll Go to Heaven”

Perry was about 9. He was at the free throw line and thought, “If I hit this shot I’ll go to heaven.” The drive to earn God’s favor started early in Perry. But it’s actually imbedded in the human heart. What are the ways we’re still “shooting free throws” to get God’s favor?

Next, it’s by believing in Jesus’ work that we are set right with God, not by our own works. But Shawna says, “Believing for me, at times, is hard work.” So is faith a kind of work we do to get God’s favor?

Ever wish you had a more powerful testimony? Shawna has. There’s never been a time she didn’t know God’s love. But she shares, “It also breaks my heart that even though I’ve always known God’s love, I’ve still chased lesser things.” We all need to run home to God’s radical grace and forgiveness.

Then, Shawna’s been noticing how often we use the word “invitation” when we talk about what God is calling us to do and be. Perry and Shawna wrestle with, “Is what God has called us to an invitation or is it actually a command?”

During Perry’s senior year at Olivet he became hyper-aware of the sins of his teenage years. He felt the compulsion to go back and fix everything. He felt the need to be punished. That’s when the gospel began to come alive in his heart!

What God has done for us in radically canceling our sin debt may leave us wondering if that decision can be revoked? Is it too good to be true? Praise God that as he hung on the cross Jesus declared, “It is finished!”

Life Is Funny Until It’s Not

I hope laughter is a regular part of your days. Maybe we even get to be a part of that. Laughter is so good for the soul.

But life isn’t always funny or fun. How do we not lose our joy in those moments and seasons?

Emmy-nominated comedian, Chonda Pierce, believes that humor can help. Her new book Life Is Funny Until It’s Not will make you laugh and cry. Maybe all at once.

Chonda takes the risk to rawly and honestly share her life story, the good, bad, and really hard, to help you and me.

Loneliness

Steve DeWitt, author of Loneliness: Don’t Hate It or Waste It. Redeem It & Senior Pastor of Bethel Church in the Chicagoland area, joins us to share that our moments and even our long seasons of heart aching loneliness need to be gospelized.

Loneliness doesn’t have to be our enemy. It can be the path God uses to move us toward flourishing in our relationship with God and the people in our world.

Then, do you ever feel like you’re not really known, and if you were, you’d be disqualified? Shawna felt that way just last week with a group of colleagues.

Perry admits: “I can so easily fall into thinking I have to perform to get God’s love. But perfectionism is bondage and the gospel is the only things that can free me!”

Lastly, what habits are being established now that will serve you well in the future?

Shawna Beyer

Shawna Beyer has a way of telling stories that create personal connection— to her, to one another, and to God. She has been a homeschool mom, church planter, project lead for a consulting company, and church staff member. Though she’s been involved in ministry with her husband (Dan) in Iowa, Arizona, and now Michigan, she was born and raised in Southern California and as they say, “You can take the girl out of California . . .” She is mom to four grown kids (Bryn, Drayson, Eden, and Haven) who no longer need her but humor her anyway. Shawna is passionate about the rhythms we weave into the fabric of our lives to fall more in love with God each day. Healthy foods are her go-to, but she will abandon that whole track in a heartbeat for a homemade cinnamon roll like Grandma used to make.
