Downtown Rock Island
From: City Government Building, 3rd Ave. & 16th St., Rock Island
To: Gloria Dei Presbyterian Church, 42nd Ave. & 12th St., Rock Island
Everyone is invited to walk with us in downtown Rock Island on Good Friday.
Our walk will be: A time for prayer and reflection on the meaning of the cross; A time to remember what Christ has done for us; A time to witness to Christ’s love to the world; A time to renew discipleship to Christ; A time of unity in Christ; A worshipful walk with others as we carry the cross and stop to pray and read scripture.
For 41 years, Gloria Dei Presbyterian Church has organized a Community Cross Walk on Good Friday in Rock Island. Many congregations and individuals of various Christian traditions have gathered together to remember the love of Christ in his death on the cross.
Participants walk three miles from City Hall to Gloria Dei Presbyterian Church and stop along the way for scripture reading and prayer. The scripture readings follow a Stations of the Cross approach to Christ’s Passion. A van drives along the route for those who are unable to walk or need a short respite.
The cross walk is a time of worship, a time to meditate on the meaning of Christ’s crucifixion in our own lives. It is also a time to witness to the larger community by our action.
For those who would like to car pool to the downtown, we will leave Gloria Dei Presbyterian Church at 8:30 a.m.
The walk begins with prayer and reading of scripture at 8:55 a.m. in front of City Hall (corner of 16th St. & 3rd Ave.) Those gathered will leave from there at 9:00 a.m. The route will follow 3rd Ave. to 12th St. We will then travel on 12th St. south to 21st Ave. We will then turn one block to 11th St. and continue on it to 42nd Ave. We will then turn on 42nd Ave. to 12th St. (Alternative route depending on conditions and number of walkers is to stay on 12th St. all the way to 42nd Ave.)
We will have a moment of reflection and worship as we place the cross with the cross in front of the church. After the service we will have a light lunch and beverage in the social hall for all participants. I
n recent years we have found we are back to the church around 11 a.m.
