The Idol of Religion

You may be thinking, "How in the world can religion be an idol?" Isn't religion supposed to show that we stand with Christ. Today on Karl and Crew Mornings, the team takes on religious legalism and how holding too fast to law and works does more damage than good. Karl shares of a time in his life where he became exactly what he loathes now: an angry evangelical. At the end of Karl's freedom story, he shares a quote from Chuck Swindoll, "Legalism is rigid, grim, exacting, and lawlike in nature. Pride, which is at the heart of legalism, works in sync with other motivating factors. Like guilt. And fear. And shame. It leads to an emphasis on what one should not be and what one should not do. It flourishes in a drab context of negativism."
