Same-Sex Marriage & the Church

Another denomination is wrestling with the issue of allowing same-sex marriages and clergy members into their churches. How do we hold a hard line on Biblical truth while expressing the welcoming love of Jesus to those embracing a same-sex lifestyle?  We will address this crucial issue of our time with John Lomperis from the Institute on Religion and Democracy and Pastor Talbot Davis of Good Shepherd Church in Charlotte, NC.

John Lomperis

John Lomperis is the United Methodist Director for the Institute on Religion and Democracy. John earned his bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies from the University of Chicago, and has an M.Div from Harvard University. He has been a member of the United Methodist Church since his confirmation as a teenager. He has been active in United Methodist congregations in four jurisdictions, and has served on the pastoral staff of two United Methodist congregations. In 2015, he was elected as a full delegate to the United Methodist General Conference, the denomination's highest governing body.

Since 1999, Talbot Davis has served the community of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, a congregation known for its ethnic diversity, outreach ministry, and innovative approach to worship.  He has been recognized for excellence in church development and evangelism.  Having served nearly 30 years in United Methodist churches, Talbot has authored 5 books including the best-selling Bible study book, Solve.  He has been married to Julie since 1984 and they have two adult children.

Chris Brooks

Chris Brooks is the Teaching Pastor of Woodside Bible Church, a multisite congregation across the metro-Detroit area.    Chris served for 20 years as the Senior Pastor of Evangel Ministries, a thriving 1600-member church in the heart of Detroit. He also served as the campus dean of Moody Theological Seminary in Plymouth, Michigan. A popular Detroit radio host since 2005, Chris is author of Kingdom Dreaming and Urban Apologetics. He graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in Finance, completed his MA in Christian Apologetics at Biola University, and graduated from the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics. He is currently pursuing a DMin degree at Asbury Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Yodit, are the proud parents of Christopher, Zewditu, Cameron, Judah, and Sophia.
