This week's message is entitled, Stewards of God’s Treasure. Join us now as we walk down the Hall of Presidents for a message by Dr. Joseph M. This is a special edition of Moody Presents, the Hall of Presidents. Today’s broadcast, which really is something of a painful memory in American history framed by the seventh president of MBI, Dr. Joseph M. Stowell III. It was 1987 when Dr. Stowell came to the Moody campus, and as an organization we had just celebrated under Dr. George Sweeting’s leadership a century of ministry. Dr. Stowell brought with him a sense of energy, almost an urgency, about the cause of Christ. He spoke often of training the next generation of Christian leaders. He was and remains an extraordinarily gifted Bible teacher. Perhaps more than anything, Dr. Stowell’s giftedness emerges as he holds up the headlines of the day in one hand and a Bible in the other. One unforgettable example was the way he responded to the events of 9-11. Who could forget that day? On September 21, 2001, just ten days after the event, he gathered together the students and faculty for a special chapel, a message he titled, "Where Was God on September 11?"

This is Moody Presents, the Hall of Presidents, a legacy look at the men who shaped the school that Moody founded. This week’s featured speaker is Dr. George Sweeting. Dr. Sweeting was raised in a small town in New Jersey, brought up in a very godly Scottish-American home. Under his parents, he came to Christ. He faced lots of obstacles growing up, including a significant health threat, but Dr. George Sweeting, under the kindness of God, emerged whole and healthy and went on to become a pastor and ultimately the sixth president of the Moody Bible Institute.

This is Moody Presents, the Hall of Presidents, a legacy look at the men who shaped the school that Moody founded. This week’s featured speaker is Dr. George Sweeting. Dr. Sweeting was born in Haledon, New Jersey, in 1924. As a young boy he committed his life to Christ and felt a calling to pursue ministry. As an answer to that call, he enrolled at Moody Bible Institute and graduated in 1945. Dr. Sweeting served as pastor and evangelist, preaching the gospel in various churches from New Jersey to Chicago and around the world.
In 1971, Dr. Sweeting was named sixth president of the Moody Bible Institute, the only president to have also attended the school. In 1971, as Dr. Sweeting took over the reins of the school from William Culbertson, great change began to take place. He brought to life a vision for a radio broadcast, a national program that would showcase what God was doing through and in the ministries of Moody Bible Institute. He called it Moody Presents, and the first program went on the air on November 9, 1971, with host Brandt Gustavson. Now, 38 years later, the program is still airing.

This is Moody Presents, the Hall of Presidents, a legacy look at the men who shaped the school that Moody founded. In 1947, Dr. William Culbertson was appointed dean of education by Dr. Will Houghton, the current president of Moody. And ultimately Dr. Culbertson became president of Moody in 1948. Dr. Culbertson loved God, loved his family, and loved a good game of golf. He also hosted a 30 minute devotional program on WMBI every week. But when it came to the gospel, Dr. Culbertson was deadly serious. This week's message, delivered by Dr. Culbertson, is titled "The Offense of the Gospel."

This is Moody Presents, the Hall of Presidents, a legacy look at the men who shaped the school that Moody founded. In early 1934, Dr. James M. Gray traveled to New York, where for the first time he heard the powerful preaching of Dr. William H. Houghton. At the time, Gray was actually looking for a successor, and upon meeting Houghton, he said to himself, "There is the man to follow me at the institute." And later that year, Will Houghton was named the fourth president of the Moody Bible Institute. Houghton was a man of the Word; he loved the scriptures. This week's message was preached in the middle of World War II. It was spiritual warfare that was on the heart of Will Houghton, and he takes us to Mark 14 in this message, "Christ the Divine Song."

This is Moody Presents, the Hall of Presidents, a legacy look at the men who shaped the school that Moody founded. It was 1904 when James M. Gray was appointed dean of the Moody Bible Institute. Ultimately he went on to become president of Moody from 1923 to 1934. But that first third of the twentieth century when Gray was so heavily involved saw enormous change in this country. It’s interesting, though, that even back then the economic struggle of farmers was the stuff of headlines. James M. Gray, a man with his soul bolted to the Word of God, was just the right man to lead Moody during these turbulent times. We hope you enjoy this challenging sermon titled: "Secret Sins, Their Nature and Their Danger."

He was born in New York City in 1851 and at a very young age sensed God’s call to the ministry. As a young man he prayed, “God, be manifest to me, a sinner,” and God answered that prayer for James M. Gray. For several years he served as rector of Boston’s First Reformed Episcopal Church. In 1892, D. L. Moody brought Gray to his Chicago school as a summer lecturer. In 1904 he was named dean of the school, ultimately serving as president from 1923 to 1934.

His name was Reuben Archer Torrey, born in 1856, just five years before the Civil War broke out. Torrey was raised in a wealthy home, attended Yale University, and studied abroad at Leipzig and Erlangen, Germany. At the end of his senior year in college, Torrey was saved. While at Yale Divinity School, he came under the influence of D. L. Moody. Little did Moody know the mighty forces he was setting in motion, thus stirring Torrey to service.
His ministry was characterized by revival, in the midst of which he was called to Moody Bible Institute, then known as the Chicago Evangelization Society. Previous weeks on the Hall of Presidents we’ve heard dramatized sermons, but this is the real voice, an actual recording of R. A. Torrey, the second president of the Moody Bible Institute. Walk with us now down the Hall of Presidents as we hear Dr. Reuben Archer Torrey preaching “Is the Bible the Word of God?"

He was a converted shoe salesman from Massachusetts who left spiritual footprints all over the globe: Dwight Lyman Moody. Born in 1837, Moody ultimately presented the gospel to more people in more places than any other man in previous history. When he died in 1899, it was literally front-page news. On today's program, a reenacted sermon from Moody, a rare recording of Moody’s song leader and soloist, and unusual excerpt of Moody’s actual voice.

Moody as you may have never met him before.

When Jesus walked our earth, He never forced a single person to believe in Him. The same is true today, but our choice to believe or disbelieve has eternal consequences. Today's episode looks at John 12 in the second part of a message titled "How Is Your Approval Rating?."

Whether it’s online or in a newspaper, it doesn’t matter what page you turn to—you find approval ratings, opinion polls. But the trend is not nearly as new as most of us think. We’re at the twelfth chapter in our continuing series in John's gospel—a fascinating point in Jesus’ life. He’s losing in the public opinion polls. Why did so many people fail to embrace Jesus then? Why don’t more people embrace Him now?

When it comes to stories about Jesus, we love the miracles, the supremacy of Christ. But rarely do we ponder—truly ponder—the suffering of Christ. We come to a study in John 12, where we’re looking at Jesus—His spiritual suffering. When we think of Christ’s physical pain, while that was real and awful, it often escapes us that His greater pain was actually spiritual: the enormous and crushing weight of our sin upon Him and Him alone.

Everybody is in pursuit of something, but just how intent are we at pursuing God? We pursue better jobs, bigger homes, shinier cars and more leisurely leisure. Then we come to John 12, the subject of fruit bearing, and Christ makes an extraordinary connection between His own death and fruit bearing. What does it all mean to us?

In the history of the world, probably no man caused more of a stir, walking through the city gates, than Jesus of Nazareth when He entered Jerusalem. What He did there, what He said there, and what people said about Him is the stuff of John’s Gospel, the twelfth chapter. It’s a message about anticipation and hope that defines so much of the human experience. It’s human to hope, but what are we hoping for? And have we set our sights high enough?

We'll look at the eleventh chapter of John at verses 47–57. What does the raising of Lazarus mean for us today? More importantly, what does the resurrection of Jesus mean for us tomorrow?

It is perhaps the ultimate question of the Christian journey: Why do cruel things happen to good people? We’ve all asked that question or had it asked of us, right? We’re going to take it straight on on today’s Moody Presents. Michael Easley's series in John’s gospel takes us to the ninth chapter. It’s a familiar story, the man born blind. It’s one of the great dangers of reading the Bible only casually—the possibility of taking a verse out of context. That’s exactly the case with Jesus’ famous statement, “The truth shall make you free.” What did He really mean? We’ll find out on today’s Moody Presents. We’re in a study of John’s gospel, the eighth chapter. “The truth shall set you free”—but what Jesus said and what we often mean are two different things, as we’ll find out next.
